Letter from Secretary of Vatican State expressing Pope's Condolences

Pope Benedict XVI has expressed his condolences on the tragic fire in Alsunga Social Care Centre "Regi", which occured on February 23 and took lives of 25 people.

The letter of the condolence was sent by Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone, Cardinal Secretary of State of the Holy See, to Bishop of Liepaja Vilhelms Lapelis as tragedy happened in his Diocese.

The Holy Father was deeply saddened to learn of the tragic loss of life in the recent fire at a home for the disabled near Alsunga. Commending all those who died to our Heavenly Father’s merciful love, His Holiness asks you to convey to the survivors and to all connected with the home the assurance of his spiritual closeness at this difficult time. As a pledge of strength and comfort in our Lord Jesus Christ, he cordially imparts his Apostolic Blessing to all who are mourning the loss of a loved one.
